The starting point for all learners is Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

The CBT introduces you to basic riding skills and road craft and we assume little or no motorcycling experience. There is no formal test at the end of the course; rather the aim is to ensure the student has the skills and knowledge to make them safe and confident rider.

The course normally takes a day to complete however any additional training required will be provided at no extra cost.

On completion of the CBT you can: at the age of 16 ride a moped on the road as a learner with L-plates. You may not carry pillion passengers or use motorways. At the age of 17 or over it entitles you to ride a moped or a motorcycle (up to 125cc, power output not exceeding 11kw or 14.6 bhp) as a learner with L-plates. You may ride unaccompanied; you cannot carry a pillion passenger or use motorways.

You must complete CBT before riding on the roads for the first time.

CBT certificates (DL 196) are valid for two years from the date of issue.
- You will need to re-take CBT if you do not pass both theory and practical tests before your CBT certificate expires.
